Mathematics and statistics

Mathematics is the basic language of natural sciences, which helps in studying, for example, figures and their behaviour. It forms the basis for logical thinking, and mathematics is also required for data processing.

Mathematicians and statisticians graduate from the University of Helsinki, the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Oulu and the University of Turku. Approximately 180 mathematicians and 25 statisticians from natural sciences graduate annually. Statisticians are also graduating from the political sciences and business science.

 Employment and career opportunities

The employment situation of statisticians is extremely good; approximately 400 statisticians (M.Sc.) are in the labour market and only a few are unemployed. There are approximately 4,600 mathematicians in the labour market and the unemployment rates is approximately 6%.

It is expected that more and more job opportunities will open up in the data and statistics processing sector in the future.
